Glossary: Nutrition Essentials for Mental Health
โBioidentical Hormones
Hormones chemically identical to those produced naturally by the human body used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT). They treat symptoms of hormonal imbalances or deficiencies, such as those associated with menopause or thyroid disorders. Unlike synthetic hormones, bioidentical hormones are derived from natural sources and designed to mimic the body's own hormones more closely, providing a more tailored and safer approach to hormone therapy.
Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB)
A selective permeability barrier that protects the brain by regulating the passage of substances between the bloodstream and the central nervous system (CNS), preventing harmful substances like toxins and pathogens from entering the brain while allowing essential nutrients and gasses to pass through. The BBB helps to maintain the brain's homeostasis and can influence the delivery and effectiveness of drugs and nutrients intended for neurological conditions.ย
Body Composition DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) Scan
A diagnostic imaging test that uses low-dose X-rays to measure lean mass, fat mass, and bone density distribution. This scan is often used to evaluate obesity, osteoporosis, and muscle mass changes and track progress in fitness or weight loss programs.
Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF)
A protein that supports the growth, survival, and differentiation of neurons in the brain and central nervous system. It plays a role in neuroplasticity and cognitive functions such as learning and memory. Physical exercise, stress, and certain mental health conditions influence BDNF levels. Reduced BDNF levels are associated with neurological disorders such as depression and Alzheimer's disease.
